Hosting company UK2.net announced today that it has followed up fantastic first quarter results with an equally successful second quarter, resulting in above target performance and exceptional half year results.

Again the success is due to excellent growth in the higher revenue and profit areas of shared and dedicated hosting, not just domain names. Also UK2.net has seen positive growth in both new customers and existing customer renewals.

We were extremely pleased with our Quarter 1 results, but are even happier to have continued the strong performance throughout Quarter 2, making 2008 one of our best years so far”, said Ditlev Bredahl, Managing Director / CEO of UK2. “We have made significant changes within UK2 over the past few years, which in turn have generated significant rewards. We have really enhanced our support, strengthened our network, launched an amazing portfolio of products and have kept our prices competitive. Underpinning all of this is a team of dedicated UK2 employees, who promise to “Bend Over Backwards” to help all our customers."
UK2.net has been a significant player in the British and European hosting markets since 1998, and is the founder brand of the UK-2 Group. UK2.net underwent a large organisational and strategic restructure in 2006 when the new Management Team came on board.

UK Host Easyspace has added the highly anticipated .me domain extension to its portfolio. The rollout of the .me extension began back in March 2008, going through its Sunrise and Land Rush periods from May onwards before being officially launched for open registrations on Thursday 17th July on a first come first serve basis.

While the .me domain has been assigned as a Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) for Montenegro, it's expected that its popularity will stretch to include use on personal websites and as a popular extension for marketing activities across the globe. Easyspace is one of only a handful of UK based registrars already selling .me domain names and, inline with the requirements of the .me registry, domains can be registered for a minimum 2 year up to a maximum 10 year period.

Just 4% of Europe's overall data centre space was governed by London operations during the first quarter of 2008, which makes it the slowest quarter since 2004 when they first began leasing space. Problems in the financial sector and a general economic slow down have been attributed to the downturn.

It's just been revealed that the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), which is responsible for translating Internet Protocol (IP) addresses into human readable form (e.g. "87.106.71.228" becomes "ispreview.co.uk") and vica versa, has had a serious underlying security flaw for several months.

The flaw, which could allow hackers to redirect your browsing activity to fake webpage’s and thus make phishing attacks even easier, was first discovered at the start of this year by security expert Dan Kaminsky (blog):

"It's not good, this class of attack is known as cache poisoning and basically an attacker can go ahead and impersonate large chunks of the web or large chunks of the internet to a random user," warned Kaminsky.
Kaminsky subsequently began informing all of the major firms and DNS management systems about the flaw, which included Microsoft, Cisco, Sun and Bind. Since then they and Kaminsky have been working in secret to develop and rollout a multi-vendor patch to solve the problem across all platforms, which finally went live yesterday evening.

Part of the reason for all the secrecy is to avoid hackers being made aware of the fault before it could be fixed, which would have made the Internet incredibly vulnerable. Happily there have been no reported incidents of this particular flaw being exploited and precise details are likely to be kept under wraps until August.

The delay in disseminating information about the flaw is designed to give the patch some breathing room for deployment. Meanwhile the patch has also been made difficult to reverse engineer, thus hindering hackers’ ability to discover the fault before it can be fully deployed.

Internet users need not be too concerned about the problem, although people should always be vigilant. To that end, Kaminsky has made a DNS check available on his blog that allows you to test whether your connection / network may be vulnerable.
