Oneandone Internet (1&1) has launched a new range of Dedicated Servers, which include the latest energy saving CPU's from AMD, more RAM and hard disk space (RAID 1 or RAID 5). Prices start from £69.99 +vat per month and servers come in either Linux, Windows or Managed configurations. 1&1 has also launched a further Value Range of servers, which cost from only £29.99 +vat per month.

Oliver Mauss, CEO 1&1 Internet said, “Whilst 1&1 is perhaps most well known for its web hosting innovations, we continue to invest much of our resource in pushing the boundaries of Dedicated Server packages. Users’ work can be transformed from having access to enterprise-level technologies such as RAID5, and we will continue to bring such developments within reach of as many users as possible”.
1&1’s new array of Dedicated Servers comprises the Business Server I (250GB disks and priced from £69/month+VAT) and Business Server II (500GB disks and priced from £109/month+VAT), both featuring software RAID1, and the Business Server III (750GB disks and priced from £149/month+VAT) and Enterprise Server I (1000GB disks and priced from £199/month+VAT) both equipped with hardware RAID1 technology. 1&1’s new flagship server, the Enterprise Server II (1500GB disk space and priced from £249/month+VAT) now features impressive hardware RAID5 technology.

1&1’s latest Value Server range greatly expands upon 1&1’s own concept of providing a low cost server solution for less demanding users. Subject to availability, Value Servers are priced from only £29.99/month+VAT, and boast AMD processors, RAID1 and disk space ranging from 80GB to 400GB. Value Servers are an excellent, cost effective option for uses such as back-up and email servers, game servers, large traffic websites and online forums.

Dedicated Server packages also include free FTP back-up space. Ranging from 50GB to 250GB, this highly redundant high-end back-up facility provides further hard disk space and is accessed directly from the server. For extra security, Linux and Windows servers benefit from an External Firewall based on Cisco hardware. 1&1 server customers now receive a premium Geotrust SSL certificate which can be used to secure web transactions. Furthermore, 1&1 Dedicated Servers are unusual in being powered by electricity from renewable resources like wind, water, or solar energy. 1&1’s use of renewable power and highly efficient hardware and software helps save around 30,000 tons of CO2 per year.

For British businesses battling the downturn, the struggle for higher search engine visibility is more important than ever. But a recent Microsoft survey revealed that small businesses in the UK are wasting £3 billion a year on websites that are virtually invisible. Pure Ink Creative helps companies overhaul their online copy to push their site up the search engines and convert visitors into customers - and is offering 10% off its services until the end of October 2008.

Sarah Evans, Pure Ink Creative's co-director, states, "If businesses invest in an ineffective website, they are not only wasting money but also failing to make the most of their online presence and the promotional resources available to them for free. Pure Ink Creative can help clients push their products or services up the rankings by creating content and keywords that search engines can index, find and display. Skilful search engine optimisation actually saves a company money by attracting visitors to its site without paid advertising."
Businesses wanting to benefit from the company's 10% introductory offer should visit http://www.pureinkcreative.com , quoting promotional quote PIC10.

Nobody wants to be caught walking bare foot through a mine field but that’s exactly what the search for a good website hosting provider can feel like. The UK alone is home to well over 200 of them, with many more existing in the USA, each with their own distinct take on services, support and price. But just who do you choose?

Naturally we can’t answer that question generally as everybody will have their own requirements, but with a few simple tips we can help you to whittle down your choices to something more acceptable:

European host 1&1 Internet has reportedly run into problems while upgrading its Microsoft Exchange e-mail platform, which has left some customers unable to access their addresses for over a day. The following statement was issued yesterday:

Following preparations for an update to new software for Microsoft Exchange 2007 Front-end, one server serving the Outlook front-end has partly been inaccessible as a result of a change in its IP address. The IP address of this server was apparently made available too late for some DNS servers for some ISPs, resulting in some hundred customers using these DNS servers not being able to access their mailbox via Outlook Web Access.

The vast majority of DNS servers have already incorporated the change to this Exchange front-end server, however, due to different DNS server configurations run by ISPs and users, a number of users may still be experiencing a reduced performance. Customers experiencing such an issue can try to refresh their DNS cache with the command IPCONFIG/flushdns. An alternative work-around would be to use a different mail-client other than OWA until the DNS-server has fully updated.

We apologise to affected customers for any concern or inconvenience caused by the configuration error.

In a deal worth £9.6m, UK Grid Data Centres has brokered a new partnership with managed hosting specialist UKFast. The deal fast tracks the availability of hosting facilities to business and allows Manchester to continue as a big player in the UK’s digital growth, which remains on an upward curve in this time of uncertainty.

The collaboration sees the facility rebranded as MaNOC – Manchester Network Operations Centre. UK Grid’s Rob Garbutt views the partnership as a natural progression for the company.

UKFast brings a new dimension to our offering with its pedigree as the UK’s Best Dedicated Host,” said Garbutt. “With their financial muscle, we’re now in a position to get all the suites within our facility online as soon as possible. Teaming up also means we can attract large blue chips right through to SMEs with an even stronger offering.
The project increases UKFast’s data centre capacity by 350% allowing co-location to return to its portfolio of services alongside managed hosting. Having announced a record pre-tax profit in 2007 of £1.45m, this year shows no let up in managed hosting growth.

The two firms are also working towards another joint venture to facilitate long term growth. The proposed development involves building a further data centre in the Greater Manchester region to compliment the current initiative.

STAR, an independent UK business ISP, has launched its Critical Switch re-direction service to enable vital business applications to continue to function in the event of an unplanned server outage. The service includes a package of consultancy from business continuity experts Business Protection Systems International (BPSI) - to offer practical advice in developing a business continuity plan - and a suite of hosting services from Star to enable small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to guarantee continuous availability of key applications, like e-commerce sites, at a monthly price point from just £225 per month.

The combination of consultancy and the Critical Switch hosting service enables companies to develop and implement a comprehensive business continuity plan and ensure high availability uptime for e-commerce websites, critical applications and SQL servers in the event of a server outage. In a recent poll of 300 UK SMBs only 40% had included IT in their business continuity plans despite almost nine out of 10 saying it was their main route to market and 48% of businesses admitting to having suffered a significant outage in the last 12 months.
